 Alka Yagnik (India)
Alka Yagnik links on Radio 3: Awards for World Music 2003 profile
nominated by:
Umer Khan, Sutton Coldfield:
'She has the most beautiful voice not only in Indian cinema but in the world, and I think she should be nominated for that reason.'
Robert Gerber, Switzerland:
'Great complex voice.'
Peter W. Simeon, Switzerland:
'She has much talent and is probably the best playback singer since Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Talents like her convinced me to listen to Indian music, although coming from Switzerland I have no Asian background at all. Since Western mainstream music is becoming less and less interesting, it's great to know that there are such talents in other parts of the world. They deserve to be known by a wider audience.'
Sarah McDougall, New York:
'The only reason that I started listening to Indian Music was because of Alka Yagnik. English singers like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears are just degrading. They dress so explicitly in their music videos. It is always good to know that there is music in other parts of the world that sound just as good if not better, and the women wear clothes!'
Dhananjay Singh, Canada:
'I think that Alka Yagnik should receive the award because if you put all of the current female bollywood singers together (excluding Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar) Alka Yagnik has the best pitch. She also has a melodious voice that can swing to any tune, fast or slow!'
