Baaba Maal (Senegal)
Baaba Maal links on Radio 3: Awards for World Music 2002 profile
nominated by:
Anna Feldman, London:
'His album Missing You is melancholic with a groovy edge and hits the mark every time.'
Keith Bridgeman, Watford:
'His work with 1 Giant Leap and others to promote understanding through music.'
Karla De Greeve, Belgium:
'I wasn't a fan of Baaba until I heard his last album Missing You. This music sounds so "real" and his voice is so strong. I went searching for some of his older albums and also like Baayo and Djam Leelii very much. His more modern "commercial" albums have some fine moments too but I prefer him with his "rawer" style.'
Jayanthi, USA:
'Fascinating voice with simple beat enchanting rhythm.'
Linda Jones, Glasgow:
'I have long been a fan of Youssou N'Dour and the way in which he has brought Senegalese music to western ears . For me, Baaba Maal takes the music further, especially in 2002.'
Paate Bah, Netherlands:
'He is well-educated, so, he gives the intellectual side of the music. More, he is so great in his profession, i have some of his albums: Missing You, Baayo, Nomad Soul, Firin' in Fouta... and all of them are treasure to me and many of my friends. Baaba pls. keep it up, you are still the best.'
Jakki Gilletth, London:
'He continues to delight and astound me with his virtuoso performances - not afraid to push boundaries, yet never compromising himself as an African artist- a unique talent.'
Phil Bevan, Kingston:
'If you've ever seen and heard Baaba and all his musicians and dancers perform live (as at the RFH) you will know what the word entertainment means!! Music of a global impact at its best!'
