nominated by:
Nick Passmore, Llandrindod Wells:
'I saw them in Presteigne and thought they were bloody good, topping an excellent bill on Sunday evening of the Sheep Music Festival. I bought their CD, and have played it loads since then. I was delighted to see that they've been nominated for this award, and am even more delighted to be able to vote for them!'
Jacky Klein, London:
'Brilliant fusion of sounds - fresh and talented!'
James Micklethwait, London:
'Seen them play in London: amazing talent and real performers. A fusion of music that is fascinating to hear has wide appeal - whatever your music taste. Surely set to go all the way - this award the obvious place to recognise them!'
Serena Donne, London:
'Because they are young and vibrant and are able to play music which appeals to all generations!'
Rhian Boardman, Southport:
'I find their music very calming.'
Harry Briggs, London:
'The music's weird and wonderful- they call it an eclectic fusion of klezma and contemporary dance- I call it a good groovy bass with some awesome surprising sounds that get every bone in your body moving... And they exude stage confidence and sex appeal- so watchable, so cool, if they don't go far it's a tragedy.'
Catherine Colloms, London:
'The best thing to happen to world music in years. A modern blend of traditional gypsy music, layered with haunting israeli melodies, and a funky stage presence to boot.'
Elliott Simon, USA:
'The hottest crossover act in world music, klez influenced trance like rhythms that make you dance; electro violin singing through the cosmos......need i say more?'
Jessica Brummer, London:
'The most inspirational, underground sounds of Jewish music for the 20th century. Their presence on stage send sparks flying and they give an exciting new dimension to London contemporary cultural music.'
Elliott Simon, USA:
'The hottest crossover act in world music, klez influenced trance like rhythms that make you dance; electro violin singing through the cosmos......need i say more?'
Adenike Forbes, London:
'Wonderful fusion of urban beats, drum and bass folk and constructive messages about culture and tolerance - much needed in these times.
Absolutley fabulous live, I saw them at the Respect festival in 2002 and they blew us away. We have been following them ever since. Energy and enthusiasm; masterful, accomplished musicians.'
Max Edwards, London:
'I saw them last year at Spitz in London. They were fantastic. The audience ranged from 18-80 and every single one of them took to the dance floor. The music was mesmerizing (Klezmerizing!?). There were many different nationalities at the gig and I felt the music conjured an ecstatic sense of unity transcending not only community boundaries but, just as rare perhaps, generation gaps too. The musicians were incredibly accomplished and the energy and vibrancy with which they played induced what can only be described as a euphoric dancing frenzy. Absolutely joyous stuff. Raw, vigorous and intelligent. It broadened my horizons to a completely new form of music. I have followed Klezmer ever since.'
Benjamin Ross, London:
'I saw them live at Limmud in Nottingham, and they were incredible; vibrant atmosphere with everyone dancing. In contrast to the klezmer scene in New York, Oi-Va-Voi combine klezmer with a uniquely London sound of breakbeats and rhythms as well as dub bass lines and a party atmosphere.'
Richard Margrett, Ilford:
'Oi Va Voi is a great blend of Jewish Eastern European Roots with modern jazz funk. This is what music should be - meaningful, funky, and coming straight from the soul.'
Mark Weeks, London:
'Innovative, lively, sexy and fun. When was the last time a band sent a tingle down your spine??'
Aimee Balaban, London:
'Funky, energetic, chilled out and a meeting of worlds:Eastern and Western and at the same time manages to bridge traditionalism and progressiveness!'
Louise Scodie, Edgware:
'Most people think Jewish music is all Barbra Streisand and old men wailing about religion. These guys show that Jewish music can be cool and enjoyed by everyone.'
Edward Chamberlin, Manchester:
'It is rare to come across a band who can adapt old musical ideas into a modern format, while staying true to the original spirit of the music. oi va voi do this admirably.'
Simon Kay, London:
'They are brilliant! The combination of Klezmer and Drum and Bass sounds like a recipe for disaster but manifests itself as a very easily consumed Casserole of Rich, vibrant thoughtful music. When seing them perform live it is obvious that their music is their passion.'
Paul Vincent, Walsall:
'The intoxicating sounds of Klezmer, absorbing the beats of modern dance music to become something even wilder. A perfect example of how traditional musics can move forward and remain relevant.'
