Praying For The Rain (UK)

nominated by:

Robin Rhind:
'They are the unsung heroes of world music having pushed the barrier of modern and ethnic music over the last ten years, and have influenced many, now fanous, musicians including Faithless, Dido and David Gray.'

Ann Williams, Cardiff:
'Their music, whether live or recorded, generates an absolutely incredible energy which genuinely seems to speak to the soul of the listener. Phenomenal.'

Stephen Macklow-Smith, London:
'The musicianship of this band is exceptional, and their sound is extremely flexible. They are very true to themselves, and their music is honest and all-embracing.'

Jenny Champagne, London:
'Great music, sometimes sweet and gentle, sometimes not! Wonderful didgeridoos! Music inspired the musicians roots and influenced by their travels, It works for me!'

Liz De Lisle, Marlborough:
'Their music is always inspiring and they are all incredibly versatile.'

Catherine Tranmer, Oxford:
'This band is absolutely inspirational, drawing on many streams of world music to create their very own sound. Not only is the music harmonious and innovative, but their lyrics strike a chord with all concerned about the human race and the environment. They have a large and loyal following in London and other parts of the UK, and their regular concerts are a sell out. Can'r understand why they aren't more popular - with several albums to their credit they certainly derserve to be. I listened to 'Enchanted' and virtually nothing else in the car for about a year!'

Naomi Kosten, Norwich:
'My nomination is Praying For The Rain - their music is full of emotion - the lively tracks are vibrant, rhythmic, energised and the audience is encouraged to dance wildly, while the slower, more gentle, tranquil, softer pieces bring tears to your eyes. The musicianship is unequalled - an eclectic blend of really talented and skilled musicians play such a wide range of fascinating instruments it's an education in concert form as each instrument is talked about and explained - and then played to perfection! It's such fun watching them all on stage - sometimes upwards of a dozen musicians all combining their musical ideas together so wonderfully into a cohesive, imaginative powerful performance! Truly deserving the name of 'world music', PFTR are absolutely celebrating the diversity of the globe's inspirations - every influence from Moroccan to Celtic, Scandinavian to Mongolian, Native American to Egyptian, African to Oriental - PFTR honour and enjoy introducing the audience to something new, something MAGICAL, something haunting, something joyous. I can't wait to see them performing live again, and so in the meantime I adore their albums - especially Harmony of Mind and Nature.'

Rowena J Ronson, Elstree:
'They are a fabulous band that I saw four times in 2002! I have been following them for several years now and I never get bored of them! There music is inspiring and speaks to the audience. It is alive! The band consists of about ten people playing all different instruments from all over the world and often they play with other friends introducing instruments from all over the world. I can't recommend more highly!'
