Why are butterflies and bees attracted to plants?
Description
Butterflies and bees make lovely summer visitors to the garden, but how can we encourage them to visit? What sorts of plants should you choose? Plants which are popular with insects are shown and discussed. What do the plants have in common? What is the connection between the shape of the flower and its visitors?
Classroom Ideas
This clip would be useful to play when learning about the classification and variation of insects. It would also be helpful when understanding about pollination of flowers. As the clip poses questions but does not answer them overtly this clip promotes observational skills and would be appropriate to play in order to stimulate discussion. The clip may also be of interest to a school gardening club or eco-council when they are making decisions about plant selection and the types of insects which will be attracted by certain plants in the school grounds.
