Rock pools
Description
A look at how the creatures that live in a rock pool survive. The presenter talks about the tide and, with the help of an expert, explores rock pool life. The sea anemone and seaweed anchor themselves to rocks for stability. A crab uses its tough shell for defence and also as camouflage. It can re-grow a missing leg or claw. The starfish has hundreds of tiny suckers that keep it firmly in place.
Classroom Ideas
Before watching the clip, ask students to suggest the environmental conditions of a rock pool - salt water, space, waves - What kind of animals would survive in this environment? What would their characteristics be? Students could discuss colour, size, ability to withstand tides.
After the clip, students could choose to 鈥榩romote鈥 one particular animal, researching its unique features and the way it has adapted to life in a rock pool. A competition could be launched to decide which organisms should be 鈥榢ing of the rock pool鈥, with students competing to convince everyone of the superiority of their chosen organism.
As an additional activity, students could draw on their knowledge of rock pool animals and create their own new species, ensuring the organisms have features which enable it to survival in a rock pool habitat.
