Interdependence and adaptation (clip compilation)

Description

A montage of clips on the theme of adaptation and interdependence. Includes images of a leopard, moth, frogs, camel, polar bears, snake, shark, insects, stone plants, sensitive plants and a tortoise. This clip has no narration.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to introduce learning about animal adaptations. To help students understand what an adaptation is, ask them to try to tie their shoelaces with their thumb pressed against their palm so they cannot use it. Students could then discuss how difficult this was. It could be explained that our thumbs are an example of adaptation which allows us to carry out intricate tasks that we require for our survival.

Challenge students to remember as many animals as they can from the clip and create a list on the board. Organise students into groups and assign each one of the animals from the clip. Students could then research this animal in order to find out how it has adapted. They could consider its habitat, predators and food source, and consider how its physical and behavioural characteristics are well-suited to cope with all of these things. Groups could present their findings to the class as reciprocal teaching.

Students could use their knowledge of animal adaptations to play a game of 鈥榃ho Am I?鈥
