It's A Funny Old World, Eh?

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 17:16 UK time, Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Portishead ringtonesI will get to why this picture made me giggle in a moment. In the meantime, here's some information about the new Portishead album.

The new Portishead album 'Third' is an amazing thing. It's among the coldest, bleakest, most brutal and punishing albums you are ever likely to hear, and yet it is made entirely from whispers, moans, bangs, clanks and groany old synthesizers.

It's also entirely gripping from start to finish, and features a song which is performed on a ukulele - complete with barbershop harmonies - and was heavily influenced by a song in the '70s comedy film The Jerk, starring Steve Martin.

Annie Knows Ur Girlfriend Hates Her

Disgruntled Rachel Stevens fans, Robyn fans, Kylie fans, pop fans, music fans...please do watch this video. It's by Annie, it's called 'I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me', and it's great.

That's not to say Linkin Park fans, Kooks fans, Amy Winehouse fans or Sigur Ros fans won't find anything to enjoy here, we've all got ears after all. In fact, can everyone please watch as much of this as you can stand - from 30 seconds to infinite repeats - and then we'll have some sort of debate about it. How would that be?

Yael Naim - 'New Soul'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:09 UK time, Wednesday, 30 April 2008

Yael NaimBeing quirky within musical circles is often seen as a bad thing. It suggests a lack of feeling, a frivolous, irreverent, silliness, and an unwillingness to get to the point of making music in the first place - namely to create a balm for the soul by banging bits of stuff together in an aurally appealling fashion.

Making music which is quirky is like being the comedy buddy in a film (or like Chandler in Friends). You're kind of useful to keep the conversation going, and sort of charming in your own way, but you'll never be the hero, or get the girl, or save the day.

How To Destroy The Hoosiers

NOTE: If a band is foolish enough to sellotape themselves to a wall in order to have a promotional photograph taken, it's their own damn fault if no-one comes back to let them back down again.

Now, if someone was to distract the people who should go back and let the band down, by, say, involving them in a dramatic rooftop rescue mission involving a nest of baby ferrets and a wicked seagull, then that's not very nice, so don't do that.

Unless you're in the Cure and they didn't offer to pay you any royalties from 'Cops & Robbers'. And even then, maybe investigate a legal settlement first?

Will.I.Am's Chinese Breakaway

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 13:51 UK time, Tuesday, 29 April 2008

Will.I.AmIn this , Will.I.Am has been very careful to explain why he will be taking his band to play in China, despite calls for a cultural boycott over human rights abuses, and the global protests in the run up to the Olympics.

You know, the ones which involve people jostling a crowd of joggers, and attempting to steal their burning stick?

Well, that may be the most interesting thing about this story to SOME people (people who, it's fair to say, are probably right), but as far as ChartBlog is concerned, it's that last paragraph which is the key one.

"The song is not officially released until next week, but has already reached the UK top 10 due to download sales of the album version, which does not include Cole's vocals."

So, if the 'Heartbreaker' goes DOWN the charts once Cheryl's version comes out, does this mean that she's spoiled it? Would that not be an amazing thing to have done? To actually make a Will.I.Am solo track LESS appealing? The same Will.I.Am - and I can't stress this enough - who released 'Got It From My Mama'?

Phew! And I think it's an achievement to walk home from work once in a while.

I tell you, if such a thing should come to pass, I'm contacting the Guinness Book of Records...

David Jordan - 'Move On'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:02 UK time, Tuesday, 29 April 2008

David JordanIf I had my way, this is the kind of stuff Justin Timberlake would be spending his time coming up with, rather than mucking about with Madonna and failing to say her name right. It might not boast a cutting-edge R&B production, it might have (gasp!) fuzzy guitars on it, and it might be all bluster and shouting, not unlike the latter days of *NSYNC, but at least it has some LIFE to it.

We Are Scientists - Bleeding-Heart Liberals, And Their Exploding Drum Carpet

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 17:51 UK time, Monday, 28 April 2008

We Are Scientists - Chris arrowed

The other day, I had the pleasure of talking to Chris Cain, the witty formerly-moustachioed bass player from boffin-popsters We Are Scientists. I wanted to quiz him about chick lit (the name of their next single, you see), chick flicks, chick rock and all manner of artistic endeavours which have been decreed to be for women only. And I did, once we'd had a brief chat about rock hotels, We Are The Physics and burning drum kits.

This interview contains the following observation: "People are having sex all the time these days, it doesn't seem to help."

That's philosophy, that is. Or if it isn't, it's eroto-cynicism. Something involving long words, anyway.

Will. I. Am ft Cheryl Cole - 'Heartbreaker'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 13:58 UK time, Monday, 28 April 2008

Will I AmWell, this would be another one to add to the list of 'Collaborations I Really Didn't See Coming', not that I'm not very excited about it. It's quite the coup for Cheryl, isn't it? (Although if Wikipedia is to be believed, which it isn't always, her vocals are only available on the British single release of this track. Not trying to rain on anybody's parade. Just sayin'.)

It is a little bit disappointing that Cheryl's contribution to the track is fairly negligible, though: she sings "you're a heartbreaker" a few times in the chorus and repeats "let's break it down" a few times during the breakdown, and...that's pretty much it. It doesn't even sound especially like her, as much as it just sounds like a generic session singer. Absolutely no disrespect to Cheryl here, but if I heard this on the radio without knowing she was a featured vocalist, I wouldn't have had a clue it was her at all.

Mariah Sacks Backing Singer Onstage

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 20:29 UK time, Sunday, 27 April 2008

If you were listening to this week's Radio 1 Chart Show you'll already have heard Fearne and Reggie laughing long and hard about this clip, which Fearne unearthed on YouTube.

It features Mariah Carey doing not one, but two astonishing things,

First she doesn't seem to be quite on top of things when the music starts, like she is unsure as to when to stop doing those pre-song vocal warmup moan things and when to start actually singing the song.

Then, a little later, she seems to be telling one of her backing singers off for singing her bit. She actually sings "stop singing my part now baby" as if this is an important part of the song, and not just a very public dressing-down, only with handclaps.

Well, she's either sacking the poor girl, or making some embarrassed joke to the band about the problems they're having with the backing tapes. Either way, it's The Fun!

PS: 'Touch My Body' has been given a once-over with the Lyriscope...which is not as rude as it sounds.

2: Sam Sparro - 'Black And Gold'
3: Estelle ft Kanye West - 'American Boy'
4: Wiley - 'Wearing My Rolex'
5: September - 'Cry For You'

Note For Newbies: So, if this week's Top 5 meets with your approval, slap the screen, and holler "High 5!" in the comments box below, If not, slap the people you don't like and yell "Denied!" then explain who's got your goat. OK?

Post categories:

WileyThey said he's afraid of foxes. They said he'd had such a major falling out with Dizzee Rascal that Diz wrote the ultra-damning 'Pussyole' about him. They also say that he's been a bit left behind in the race to take grime into the mainstream by Kano, Dizzee...even Lethal Bizzle. They say a lot of things about Wiley, he's that kind of person. But even if any of these things are true, they're nothing compared to the kind of things people are going to say once this song is a hit.

Hadouken! - 'Declaration Of War'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 09:14 UK time, Saturday, 26 April 2008

Hadouken! That's an interesting title for a Hadouken! song, isn't it? Everything the band has released so far, from the scenester-baiting 'That Boy, That Girl' to the hedonistic 'Liquid Lives' has already sounded like a battle line drawn between the band and anyone who isn't a) young b) wild or c) one of their sort of people. It's a classic pose for a new musical act, pretending that you are the keeper of a new set of standards, and anyone who fails to meet them is your mortal enemy. My Chemical Romance did it too, only without as much day-glo streetwear...

Fraser McAlpine | 17:31 UK time, Friday, 25 April 2008

Happy Five N00bs Friday CardIt'd be nice to have your own public holiday devoted to exploring the musical output of five new artists, from very different musical backgrounds, wouldn't it? All over the world, people could put aside the time to broaden their musical knowledge, and to explore new sensations, from a wide spectrum of musical thought.

Trouble is, unless the greetings card manufacturers are on board, it's not going to happen, and I can't see them unveiling a new range of Happy Five N00bs Friday products any day soon...

...so we'll just have to go it alone. Who's with me?

The Black Ghosts - 'I Want Nothing'

I like this video a lot. Cartoons in pop videos are always good, especially when they look like the really early days of animation, as this does.

Shame the people who made it seem to want to call themselves Cult-Geist (*cough*NATHANBARLEY*cough*), but you can't have everything. Where would you keep it?

The Script - 'We Cry'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:07 UK time, Friday, 25 April 2008

The ScriptI have never wondered what it would be like if Daniel Bedingfield attempted to re-write 'Under The Bridge' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a social commentary about the way society is going these days, and then got Maroon 5 and Orson to jam it out, in a meaty-pop style.

Hopefully neither have you. And yet here's a song which could have come from this exact set of unlikely circumstances, which does make me wonder what other unasked for musical stews are currently bubbling away on the stove...

Lyriscope - Mariah Carey's 'Touch My Body'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 18:01 UK time, Thursday, 24 April 2008

LyriscopeAs charming as the video for Mariah Carey's latest song 'Touch My Body' is - you know, the one with the IT support guy and the Lazer Quest kit - the song itself raises a scientific question about what her understanding of sexy-talk actually is.

I mean some of the scenarios described within the song seem do-able, but some are downright weird, and don't sound massively pleasurable either. So what we need is some kind of report, in which each of the 'sexy' moments in the song are re-enacted, and a measurement taken as to how achieveable they actually are. A measurement using a tool like this one here - the Lyriscope.

Goggles on, Pop Boffins. Let the experiment begin!

Album Cover Artwork Explained...

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 14:07 UK time, Thursday, 24 April 2008

Jay Sean - My Own WaySo, here's the artwork for Jay Sean's album 'My Own Way', which will be out on the 12th of May. Nice, innit?

However, as is sometimes the case with album covers, there seems to be something of a gulf between what this picture thinks it is saying, and what it is actually saying.

What It Thinks It Is Saying: "Hi, I'm Jay Sean. I'm sophisticated, sharply-dressed, and totally single-minded in the pursuit of the finer things in life. I've seen you around, and I have to say I like what I see. I think we're cut from the same cloth, and I should know about these things as I wear fine tailoring. Naturally I'm a very busy man, but I'm willing to make an exception in your case. Have your people call my people, and we'll do lunch...and maybe later you can look over my portfolio, if you know what I'm saying..."

What It Is Actually Saying: "I should really wash my hands more often."

One Night Only - 'It's About Time'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:14 UK time, Thursday, 24 April 2008

One Night OnlyTrying hard isn't the same thing as doing well. That's why school reports give separate scores for effort and attainment (or at least they did when I was at school). It's to keep motivation going for children who are working really hard on their spelling but still can't managed to get the vowels in 'weird' the right way around. You basically have to find a way to tell them they're doing the right thing, even when it looks like they're not getting anywhere fast.

Glastonbury

It's really not Glastonbury's year, is it?

Ever since it was announced that Jay-Z will be playing, they've had howls of outrage from indie fans, just because an entire festival has booked one act who they personally don't like. This despite the obvious counter-argument which says that anyone who claims rappers don't belong at Glasto has clearly not been there. Hip hop is just one of a bazillion musical forms that the festival has devoured in its rich history. Pay attention!

Also, ticket sales have been slower than usual, which is probably due to a few wet years. Now, that is a very real problem, and not just a case of expecting disgruntled festival-goers to knuckle down, don wellies and shut up. They've got a point.

Pendulum - 'Propane Nightmares'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 09:37 UK time, Wednesday, 23 April 2008

PendulumPendulum are a very problematic band. They're a brilliant open door into drum'n'bass, their songs are accessible, shiny and HUGE. They're a very loud, very, very poppy introduction to the genre; they take those vworp, vvvwworp noises that damn near characterise the genre and burn them into your brain, bringing jungle back after years of derision and they're extrordinarily successful at blending the aesthetics of big, stupid stadium-rock with electronic distortion.

How to destroy Sam Sparrow

NOTE: Actually, I can't imagine how you could arrange to recreate this little tableau in actual real life, so there's no point telling you not to try it at home. Even if you could get Sam Sparro anywhere near your house (perhaps by bribing him with pretty shoes), you'd have to have a trained sparrowhawk ready to go, and which of us has one of those? Certainly not me.

That said, I would imagine Sam Sparro's worst fear in the whole world would be to lose his hair (we'll gloss over the fact that his eyes seem to have gone with the hair, it's icky), so you can bet that if you COULD get all this to happen, and you had a really good reason for doing it, it would totally work.

How To Destroy Other People...

Back Of The Sofa - Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Fraser McAlpine | 13:59 UK time, Tuesday, 22 April 2008

A SofaNever mind that Dan is wearing a television throughout this video, or that Mr Le Sac has angel wings, or that there is cleavage on display, but not the kind that Nuts readers would enjoy...the key thing about this video is that Scroob wears his watch with the face pointing out from his inner wrist. Freaky, huh?

How you wear your wrist-watch is to be one of those great dividers which people never really talk about. Some people wear their watches facing outwards, and others wear theirs facing inwards. But it's very rare for an outy person to switch over and become an inny, or vice versa.

Both sides claim they do it because it feels more natural and comfortable that way, and yet, it's a wrist-watch, it's not something which is hard-wired into our DNA, they've only been in widespread use for about 100 years. And it doesn't seem to be a split which takes into account left or right-handedness either.

And there's more. What with mobile phones and stuff, people are wearing watches less and less these days, which seems a shame, as they can really add something to a forearm. That said, the writers of the world's spam emails seem to still think that the one thing we all want after we've had parts of ourselves made longer is a new watch. Maybe even a fake Rolex!

Lord knows why the next thing they think we would want after groinal surgery is a flashy timepiece. Maybe they think that everyone who gets these spam mails will see the watch and immediately realise that you, the owner, must have either already had it done, or never needed it doing in the first place.

And maybe if you're wearing the watch on your inner wrist, that's a way of saying you don't really want to brag...but you could if you needed to. A point the PipSac must be trying to make on a very subtle level.

Just as well the song is good too, or we might not have had the chance to really think about the issue like this, right?

Delays And The Most Ironic Interview Ever...

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 16:59 UK time, Monday, 21 April 2008

Delays - Colin arrowed

Thanks to Alanis and her vague interpretations of the word ironic, the descriptive word for a state of things where the outcome of an event is the opposite to what was expected, only in a really pointed sort of way, has been a hotly debated topic.

Nevertheless, if you're in a band called the Delays, and you're half an hour late for an interview, I tend to think that qualifies, don't you?

Also, if you're Colin from the Delays, and the interview can only take place over the phone, and your interviewer - me - has lost his voice, well that's close enough too, surely? And then when he tries to explain his vocal problems to you, you say "sorry, can you say that again?"... and then he finds himself over-explaining some of his questions...well you get the picture.

Isn't that ironic? YES, WHAT OF IT?

Scoop! New Lily Allen Stuff!

Fraser McAlpine | 14:04 UK time, Monday, 21 April 2008

Lily AllenIsn't the internet brilliant? Astonishing stuff has happened over the last couple of days, and yet there's been no fanfare, no parades, no weeping in the streets. It's almost as if exciting things are happening online all the time, and you never know what you'll find out if you just stay alert enough. Several amazing things are probably being posted to the web RIGHT NOW! Like the new album by a band we will all be totally in love with in a month's time AND some footage of a monkey riding a dog to the shops.

For example: Here's a special message Lily Allen sent out to her fans last Thursday on ...

"I posted a couple of new songs on the player for you all to have a listen to and get an idea of my new direction, they are just at a demo stage so don't be too hard on them. I'll probably swap some others around and play you stuff as I do it in the studio, like I did last time round."

And here's an illicit YouTube version someone else has already made of one of those songs, the very swoony 'I Could Say'. I can't put the other song up, because it's quite sweary.

Dandankiwi has described it as "so athmospheric!!", and who am I to argue with him?

Since then, both songs have been played many, many times, and rightly so, because even in embryonic form, good Lily Allen songs are wonderful things indeed.

Not that I care. I'm off to look for that film with the monkey and the dog. TTFN!

Robyn - 'Who's That Girl'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 09:56 UK time, Monday, 21 April 2008

RobynThere are a lot of reasons to love Robyn, obviously, but one of mine is the playfulness with which she treats her punctuation. Perhaps it comes from the sort of appreciation of English that you only truly get when you learn it as a second language, as I've heard some other European pop stars say. The best example, of course, was the exclamation mark in 'Be Mine!' that was there to trick us - it leads you to expect a strident, commanding, uptempo pop ditty only to wrongfoot you with a wistful, yearning ballad - the plea to "be mine!" was an ultimately futile one.

Jay Sean - 'Maybe'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:22 UK time, Sunday, 20 April 2008

Jay SeanSongs which begin with the words "beep beep", and go on to detail the experience of receiving a text message from a hot lady are few and far between, and that's probably a good thing. That said, Jay somehow manages to try and avoid sounding incredibly smug and desperate when crow-barring a silly lyrical theme into his song (in this case it's references to modern communications technology - being online, having a profile on Facebook). Which is more than you could say for a lot of overconfident R&B singers.

You'll also need to register if you wish to post a comment. It's part of the ´óÏó´«Ã½ Blog Team's united effort to defeat The Evil Spam Hordes.

Lupe FiascoThis may annoy a few rap fans, and I really don't mean it to sound as disrespectful or stupid as perhaps it will, but the thing I like best about this song is that it really reminds me of 'Summertime' by the Fresh Prince. In fact, the very thing I thought the first few times I listened was "oh great! Someone's finally picked up where Will Smith left off", and then immediately began beating myself around the face and neck with a 2Pac CD for thought crimes against real hip hop culture.

All Change At ChartBlog

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 12:34 UK time, Wednesday, 16 April 2008

Take a good long look at ChartBlog as it is right now...it won't be like this for much longer...*sob!*

Actually, it's not that bad, but there is a significant change coming to ChartBlog (and all ´óÏó´«Ã½ blogs) which will hopefully make the act of leaving comments a lot better in future.

The problem with things as they are, is that our servers have been under attack from evil spammers, which has caused no end of trouble. If you've ever tried to put a comment on a ´óÏó´«Ã½ blog and found that the page has timed out or worse, the comment has just never appeared, that'll be why.

So, from tomorrow, we're doing things slightly differently. You'll still be able to leave comments, but you'll have to register your details with us first. It'll be fairly clear how to do it, and it's just a way to make sure that you're not trying to publicise a site which sells sex-pills or an operation which will increase the girth of something.

In order to make the changeover, we've had to stop all new comments going up from 6pm tonight until early tomorrow morning. After that, it's a Brave New World.

See you there!

The HoosiersYou know how your dad goes on about all music sounding like rubbish versions of what Proper Bands did when he was young? Well, I don't want this to sound like him. I don't want to necessarily say this is a rubbish version of a song from thirty years ago but it definitely is a version of such.

Here is 'The Lovecats' by The Cure:

Happy Birthday, Ravers!

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 18:15 UK time, Tuesday, 15 April 2008

Champagne and glow sticksThis week, dance music has been popping open bottles of champagne and blowing down those unfurly hooter things people have at parties, to celebrate two notable anniversaries in its glorious history.

Mind you, dance music tends to behave like that all the time, so let's just imagine they're really BIG bottles and, y'know, gold-plated hooters or something.

Anyway, two major dance institutions are celebrating significant birthdays this week. Mixmag is 25 years old, and Positiva Records - home of Fragma, the Shapeshifters, and best of all - is 15.

Back Of The Sofa - Sam Isaac

Fraser McAlpine | 15:03 UK time, Tuesday, 15 April 2008

A SofaWhat I like best about this song - which seems to have fallen under the ChartBlog radar since it was release in late March, or indeed, down the back of our sofa. Hey! Great idea for a feature! - is that it sounds like a Los Campesinos! sort of a song, only played at a slower speed. Hell, Sam's voice even sounds slowed down, and this is a LIVE VIDEO!

It's probably something to do with his slightly slurred delivery, but still. A Campesinos! 7" at 33rpm is what it sounds like. And that is just FINE BY ME.

Sam Isaac - 'Fire Fire'

I took the liberty of speeding up a section of the song, so you can hear what Sam's voice sounds like at the right speed. C'mon, add a glockenspiel and it's just like 'You! Me! Dancing!' or something...

Adele - 'Cold Shoulder'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:10 UK time, Tuesday, 15 April 2008

AdeleI think it's fairly safe to say at this point that the marketing push for the so-called "New Amys" (and let's face it, given the state of the Old Amy these days, keeping a couple of spares on hand is just good sense) has been a roaring success, with Adele and Duffy taking up considerable amounts of valuable Top 10 real estate in 2008 with their singles and albums. Forgive me, though, if I remain a little suspicious. I'm naturally wary of anyone who has , partially because anything genuinely deserving of an award ought to get one on its own merits in the end, surely? Perhaps I'm just getting old, but what ever happened to the good things coming to those who wait, eh?

Advice On Remixing From Hadouken!

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 18:00 UK time, Monday, 14 April 2008

hadouken_james_150.jpgI promise this will be the last posting about that blessed Radiohead remix for now. But I did manage to get some advice on the best way to approach that kind of thing from a veteran knob-twiddler, in the form of James Smith of 'grindie' darlings Hadouken!

The good news is, we moved off my need to talk about how clever I am quite quickly, and there's actually some useful information for anyone who fancies themselves as a back-bedroom Timbaland, so everyone's happy!

PS: Check out the bit at the end where we revolutionise the music business. JUST LIKE RADIOHEAD!!!

Hadouken!'s album, 'Music For An Accelerated Culture' is out on May 5th, and is very very good.

Rick Astley - remixed

You know that thing people do where they trick their friends into believing they've spilled something down their front, via the medium of pointing, then doink their nose when they look down? Well, the internet has its own variation on this theme, and it's called 'Rick-Rolling'.

Rick-Rolling, as I'm sure you already know, is when someone posts a link on their webpage or blog, which claims to be a link to something amazing, but it turns ouhahaha, it turhahahah, it turns out to behahaha, sorry, I can DO this...it turns ohahahahaha

*self faceslap*

OK, so it turns out to be a link to Rick Astley's song 'Never Gonna Give You Up', a hit from 1987. That's the joke.

It's a good joke, isn't it? You expect one thing, you get another. Like if I offered to make you a cup of tea, only I came back with a cup of coffee. Or I answer your phone, and tell you it's your mum, when actually it's your doctor, with some serious test results.

BAM! Comedy gold.

And, as with a lot of very funny things on this here internet, the joke has gathered such massive momentum that a group calling themselves the RickRollerz has remixed the song and released it.

Of course, if we were to all adhere to the spirit of the joke properly, what we'd all do, right, is tell Rickrollerz we were going to buy their blatant cash-in remix, and then all go and buy something else instead.

That would be SO. FUNNY.

The Wombats - 'Backfire At The Disco'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:46 UK time, Monday, 14 April 2008

The WombatsFirst there was panic, then there was backfire. I tell you, I am NEVER going to a disco again, they sound like terribly dangerous places. Mind you, you'd probably expect there to have been more of a panic AFTER the backfire than before. Unless whatever it is that caused the panic also went on to cause the backfire, like something so terrifying it caused an instant bowel evacuation by everyone present. That would certainly cause panic, even if the terrifying thing suddenly went away again.

The FeelingFeeling fans, do you ever get suspicious that someone might be trying to test your devotion? Do you listen to every new song by the band in total delight, playing it over and over again so that you can learn it faster, only to discover that there's bits of it which are getting in the way of your total enjoyment? Bits which could really easily have just been left out? Cos I do.

Against Me! - 'Stop'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 10:17 UK time, Saturday, 12 April 2008

Against Me!Hmmm... As lovely as it is to have a band who are attempting to really say something with their music, a band who want to reach people and send out positive messages to try and change the cynical world in which we live, a band who really want to mean something (you can go ahead and put inverted commas around any bits of that last paragraph, if you like. I was actually trying not to sound snarky for a second), something doesn't quite feel right.

The Charts - Upgraded!

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 11:45 UK time, Friday, 11 April 2008

´óÏó´«Ã½ Sound IndexThere's loads of different ways in which you can count whether a song is popular or not. The original - and best - is the old fashioned chart of actual sales, where every song bought is tallied up. Then there's the American chart, which is based around sales and radio play, or the charts which are just about radio play, or about how many times a frog blinks when shown a picture of Madonna, or...

Well, loads of different ways, as I said.

But what about a chart which brings together every time a song or artist has been talked about or listened to or watched on the internet? That would be a chart worth looking over, wouldn't it? The ´óÏó´«Ã½ Sound Index crawls some of the biggest music sites on the internet - Bebo, MySpace, Last.FM, iTunes, Google, YouTube and the ´óÏó´«Ã½ - and then counts and analyses this data to make an instant list of the most popular 1000 artists and tracks on the web...every six hours!

The more blog mentions, comments, plays and profile views an artist or track has, the higher up the Sound Index they are. And you can filter the Sound Index to reflect the sites you use the most, or your favourite music styles, or the things people your age like, or people who live near to where you live.

Hell you can filter it so it becomes a chart of people twice your age on the other side of the country from you if you want. That's just how damn flexible a thing this is.

Gwan, go check it out. It's The Future...

Clocks - 'Old Valve Radio'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 09:46 UK time, Friday, 11 April 2008

ClocksSometimes, I know, it must seem from reading my reviews that I hate indie music. Maybe that I hate all music. Just to clarify: I far from hate music, even and especially indie music. I love music lots and lots, I buy hundreds of CDs across the full genre-spectrum, I constantly seek out new and exciting things to listen to, I dance around my room singing to things at the top of my voice, do a bit of amateur DJ-ing and sometimes just sit and stare in silent contemplation at how AMAZING some music really can be. However, it just so happens that the rash of horrible, hideous faux-indie wet-nosed scamps dressed up as bands is continuing, unimpeached and so sometimes, music needs a bit of tough-love and the occasional "I'm not angry, I'm just very, very disappointed" piece of sentimentalism.

Yoav - Newton Faulkner Squared!

Fraser McAlpine | 14:43 UK time, Thursday, 10 April 2008

OK, so that's possibly not the best recommendation for a new artist. But what Mr Yoav here and Captain Ropebeard DO have in common is the ability to create music by hitting their chosen instrument - the acoustic guitar - in a variety of ways. Newton does his stuff totally live, all in one go, whereas Yoav uses his guitar to make loops and then jams over the top.

This is 'Club Thing', his new single, which is out on April 7th. Rather good, innit?

Kanye WestGolly, what's this all about then? A spooky hip hop track, with a woozy, dreamlike backing (well, nightmarelike, really), in which Kanye gets caught out by the paparazzi while cheating on his girlfriend, and then all hell breaks loose. It's accompanied by a twilight video in which someone gets stabbed with a spade by a hot girl in her pants, and for some reason, the lighter fluid she has sprayed all over her fur coat has been pixillated out. Killing people with garden impliments is fine, you see, but setting fire to your clothes? That's irresponsible!

How to destroy Robyn

NOTE: Gang warfare is not funny, or nice. And setting the Crips (that's them in the blue) on someone just because they happen to like wearing a bandana which suggests they're affiliated with arch-rivals the Bloods is only to be considered in extraordinary circumstances. Like if Robyn had begged you to do it because she's a big fan of Snoop Dogg (reported to have worn the blue do-rag in his time) and was feeling a bit suicidal, and even then, you would probably want to suggest counselling first.

Did anyone see the story that was doing the rounds a day or two ago, which claimed that UK rapper Wiley doesn't appear in the video for his new song 'Wear My Rolex' - a song which features girls wearing fox heads and eating chicken out of bins - because he is afraid of foxes?

Well...and anyone with a weak heart might want to sit down before reading any further...apparently, it's a load of old fooey, as this handy clip from 1Xtra's Ace and Vis show illustrates (and I MEAN illustrates)...

I recommend you go and listen to the whole thing, which is on Ace & Vis's blog, if only because there's some confusion about what kind of terrain is suitable for lions and tigers...

Britney Spears - 'Break The Ice'

Britney SpearsToday is a GREAT DAY in POPULAR MUSIC HISTORY, people! We are all present at the birth of a brand new musical experience, and it is one which will transform the traditional thick boundaries between artist and audience into a barely-there, tissue-thin flappy wall. It's not the song, which is basically a variation on 'Give It To Me' by Timbaland only with the monolithic synths from Usher's 'Yeah' instead of Timbo's trademark finger-drums.

Newton Faulkner Surfs The Web

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 18:08 UK time, Tuesday, 8 April 2008

Newton Faulkner surfingIt will come as no surprise to many of you that Newton Faulkner - the man who resembles the offspring of a ginger pirate and a mop, and finger-twiddling one-man band - is not brilliant at making websites. It's not his job to be brilliant at making websites. He's a pop star. Mariah Carey couldn't parse html code if she was forced to at gunpoint (nor could I, actually, it sounds painful), and she hangs out with web nerds. Newton Faulkner probably hangs out with buccaneers and footpads.

And yet, given the chance to talk to Newton - sorry, The Newt - about anything at all for 10 minutes or less, what's the one topic we kept going back to? Blogging. Not how to wash dreadlocks or if he ever gets into trouble with guitar manufacturers for flicking and bashing their products the way he does...but BLOGGING?

Now, I appreciate that that's probably among the geekiest sentences you've ever read, but this isn't just a load of guff about fonts and the absolutely correct shade of puce (although there is some of that), it's also a great way to highlight the work of the photographers and artists whose work has been crammed into a 5" square (or 7" or 12", depending) and then racked up in your local record shop. Lightspeed ChampionApologies to all those of you who are still mourning Test Icicles, but I was never one of you. Indeed, the only thing I remember about them is the way they split, with Devonte Hynes admitting rather guiltily that they were never really all that keen on their own music. This stands out for me as a rare brilliant moment of band/audience directed honesty and ought to be applauded and studied in depth by all undergraduates at Band School as a great demonstration of the ways in which you can not only afford your fans the respect they deserve without being an asshat about it. And also how you can provide really great interview copy for journalists.

Fraser McAlpine | 13:50 UK time, Monday, 7 April 2008

A SofaDoes it still count as subversive to give yourself a band name that broadcasters can't use for fear of bringing down a storm of protest from concerned parents and the Daily Mail? I guess it's a good way to keep yourself out of the mainstream of things. Not that there are many instruments-only boffin-rock bands jostling for space with Mariah Carey at the Grammys, but still.

Anyway, for the purposes of this little featurette, let's imagine the name of this band is Holy Fusk, and not anything which might get me into trouble, especially when all I want to say is that this piece of music is a very lovely thing indeed. 'K?

There's a lot of chat flying around at the moment about how this band - well, this SONG, the album's not out yet - sounds absolutely nothing like the Arctic Monkeys or the Rascals, a fact which is considered to be all the more amazing seeing as it's Alex Turner out of the Arctic Monkeys singing alongside his NBF Miles Kane from the Rascals. Goldfrapp - 'Happiness'

Post categories:

Fraser McAlpine | 09:56 UK time, Sunday, 6 April 2008

GoldfrappWe all have good reason to suspicious of the word 'happiness', especially you ladies. Not because of any misguided goth logic about how happiness is just an illusion and the only true reality is eternal pain, mind. If happiness is an illusion, so is sadness, which would make the only true reality an eternal shrug. But, the reason we should be suspicious of the word is that it has been used in the past to manipulate the minds of unsuspecting girls by sleazy men who like to make bold claims about their ability to pull.

Elliot MinorRe-releasing songs is a confusing thing for all bands. Aside from the fact the royalties probably turn into a complete nightmare, you have to re-record the video and probably screw about with the mix a bit and you aren't the people you were when you wrote it so it's all a bit weird anyway, etc., etc. Still, when you've got a bit famous and think your first single was your best even though everyone ignored it at the time, it's a valid option.

Blood Red ShoesOh well, if you INSIST... This is what I have to say. I like your band, I really do. I like the mix of fiery playing, aggro-shouty street urchin singing and accusatory lyrics. I particularly like that song of yours called 'It's Getting Boring By The Sea', that was a cracker.

And this song contains a lot of what made that song good. But for some reason it doesn't quite gel properly. All of the individual sections are fine, but they sit together uneasily, and it makes for uncomfortable listening (and not in a cool, 'challenging' way).

Elvis Is (Finally) Dead

Fraser McAlpine | 18:01 UK time, Thursday, 3 April 2008

Elvis - Chalk outlineSo, did you see that Mariah Carey has beaten Elvis Presley's record for No.1 singles in the US pop chart? Exciting times, eh?

Mariah told Associated Press that this doesn't mean she personally considers herself to be better than Elvis: "I'm just feeling really happy and grateful. I really can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionised music but also changed the world, that's a completely different era and time."

Which is only right and proper. Good manners are important. What worries me is how Elvis's peeps are going to react to this fairly inevitable turn of events. I mean they've already proved themselves to be fairly sensitive to any claims that The King Of Rock 'N' Roll is no longer the global icon he once was.

Natasha BedingfieldPersonality is a much underrated thing in modern music, too little, and no-one remembers your name, too much, and you're just plain annoying. And watching singers work out the right amount does create an interesting tension between artist and audience. The more an artist wishes minimise their own quirks, and sound like other artists that they personally admire, the less of their own personality they put into their songs, and the less interesting their music becomes.

How To Destroy The Feeling

NOTE: Don't play with electricity. Just don't. I once put the electrodes from my electric train set in my mouth (I was 8, and stupid), and nearly died as a result, so I know what I'm talking about. I mean you might want to try it, just to see what happens. I know I did. But what happens is you get thrown across the room and you can't control your muscles to pull the damn things out of your mouth and it hurts and you can't see properly and...just don't do it, OK? Trust me!

Having said that. If Dan Gillespie Sells turns out to be a flesh-eating zombie or something, well then it might be alright. But check with a grown-up first, OK?

Press releases

James - 'Hey Ma'

"The story of James is the story of rock and roll itself."

a) No it isn't, unless James first got together in the deep South of America in the mid-'50s, fusing rhythm & blues with bluegrass and country, and then acting as a catalyst to an entire generation of post-war disaffected teens, mobilising them into openly rebelling against the values of their parents. Was that James? I don't believe so.
b) It's rock 'n' roll. Calling it rock and roll misses the point somewhat.
c) A bit later on in the press release, the band's album 'Laid' is referred to as "seminal". ICK!

Fraser McAlpine | 16:39 UK time, Tuesday, 1 April 2008

Pippi LongstockingI didn't intend to start writing another thing about Madonna so soon after yesterday's revelations, but this has been doing the rounds today. This is what happened when a Vanity Fair journalist told her Madgesty that he had never read the children's book Pippi Longstocking. The book is one of her favourites, you see, and you can totally understand why, because it's about a wild feral girl with big super-strong muscles and a wooden chest full of gold coins, who does everything her own way*.

Madonna: Do you have a daughter?
Vanity Fair: No, three sons.
[Madonna looks at Vanity Fair accusingly.]
Vanity Fair: I didn't choose it - it just happened.
Madonna: Do you believe that? You think things just happen?
Vanity Fair: I think that just happened.
Madonna: Mm-hmm.
Vanity Fair: So who's making the decision?
Madonna: You are, you and your missus.
Vanity Fair: About what kind of kids we want?
Madonna: You chose it. Your soul chose it.
Vanity Fair: No. Do you believe that? That my insides wanted boys?
Madonna: Unconsciously. Yes.
Vanity Fair: I kind of like the idea, three sons - it’s like having a little army out in the woods.
Madonna: And all the work they can do, and you can teach them carpentry and then build houses for you in Old Greenwich, or wherever you live.
