Tom, Dick and Harry have £500 to share out between them. They agree that Tom will get £10 more than Dick, and Dick will get £20 more than Harry. How much do they each receive?

Details of a possible solution. Using the following letters, with Tom (T), Dick (D) and Harry (H), gives
T+D+H=500
T=10+D
D=20+H
Solving these three equations gives Harry with £150, Dick with £170 and Tom with £180.
