Puzzle No. 775 – Friday 3 July 2020
After several months the barbers open again (on Sat 4 July) tomorrow. A barber has a regular set of clients and sees 60 per week, with each client normally visiting once every 4 weeks. They have capacity to see 80 per week so how long will it take to get through the backlog?

We have been in lockdown for more than 4 weeks, and everyone wants to get a haircut. The barber has 60*4=240 clients. If the barber sees 80 clients a week it will take 240/80=3 weeks to see everyone. However, once the backlog is over things could be quiet again (for 1 week) until 4 weeks has elapsed since the first customer has had their first haircut post-lockdown.
