Puzzle No. 689– Wednesday 4 March 2020
As well as being World Maths Day, today is the start of Maths Month on the North Yorkshire Coast, an annual event encouraging people to engage with maths and numeracy. If the population of Scarborough town is 4 times the population of Whitby town, and the total is 75,000, what is the population of both towns?
Today's #PuzzleForToday has been set by Bobby Seagull and fellow maths teacher Susan Okereke, who are both co-hosts of the Maths Appeal podcast.
Click here for the answer
Scarborough - 60,000
Whitby - 15,000
You can set up as algebraic ratios.
Let Whitby = x and Scarborough = 4x.
5x = 75,000
x = 15,000
