"There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from a听top medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion -听it's a great programme to present."

| | | | Parkinson's Disease
Barbara Myers is back with a new series of Check Up, the health phone-in, where you put your questions direct to the experts. In the first programme, Barbara and her guest will be answering your queries on Parkinson鈥檚 Disease. Parkinson鈥檚 is a progressive neurological condition affecting movements such as walking, talking and writing. It is named after Dr James Parkinson (1755-1824), the London doctor who first identified Parkinson鈥檚 as a specific condition.
In the UK, one in 500 people, or around 120,000 individuals have Parkinson鈥檚. Usually symptoms appear after the age of 50 and the risk of getting Parkinson鈥檚 increases with age. Parkinson鈥檚 has three main symptoms - tremor, muscular stiffness that can affect posture and forming facial expressions, and a slowing of movement.
So when should we be concerned that we or someone we know is showing the early symptoms of the disease? Does the condition run in families? What is the treatment that doctors usually prescribe and what are your options should conventional therapy stop being effective. You can ask your question by calling 08700 100 444, or email checkup@bbc.co.uk
Next week we will be talking about Tropical Diseases.
