Insomnia

Most people have had trouble getting to sleep at some time in their lives, perhaps due to worry, a bad cold or too much excitement.

But imagine if you lay awake night after night for a month or even longer with no obvious cause, and are exhausted during the day, until the very fear of not being able to sleep keeps you up.

This condition is known as chronic insomnia, and it听affects 10 to 15% of the population and 12 million prescriptions for sleeping tablets are written in the UK every year.

New research by Barbara Myers' guest shows that there is a drug-free solution.听

Simple self-help strategies such as sleep hygiene - not watching TV or using a computer late at night - can have long-lasting positive effects on sleep patterns.

Restricting how much you sleep and not going to bed too early can make a difference.

It all sounds like common sense, but it is backed by real scientific evidence.
