Urinary Tract Infections

In this episode of Check Up, Barbara Myers will be taking listeners' calls on Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

The urinary tract consists of the various organs of the body that are involved with urine production (kidneys), collection (bladder) and transport (ureters or urethra).

Symptoms of UTIs are wide-ranging and include an intense urge to urinate all the time; pain or burning when passing urine; cloudy, foul smelling or blood tinged urine; nausea or vomiting, particularly in children and pain or discomfort in the side or lower back.

Women are more prone to getting UTIs, as the urethra (the duct leading from the bladder to the outside) is shorter and closer to the anus than in males.

As a result, bacteria have a shorter distance to travel in order to gain access to the bladder.

It is estimated that as many as one in five women will develop some sort of UTI in her lifetime.

UTIs are less frequent in men, and are mostly associated with an identifiable underlying cause, such as an enlarged prostate gland.听

Joining Barbara in the studio will be Mr Gerald Rix, a consultant Urological Surgeon from Colchester General Hospital.

He'll be able to assist with diagnosis and听give advice about treatments as well as how to reduce the risk of contracting a UTI.
