"There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from a听top medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion -听it's a great programme to present."

Coeliac Disease
Once thought to be a childhood condition, the gut disorder is often diagnosed when people reach their 30s or 40s and it runs in families.
Symptoms
Coeliac Disease is a lifelong inflammatory condition of the gastro-intestinal tract and is triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat. Symptoms can include lethargy and breathlessness, anaemia, mouth ulcers, abdominal discomfort and bloating. Some of the more acute symptoms can be vomiting, diarrhoea and severe weight loss.
Diet
Once diagnosed - a piece of the small intestine is removed and examined - then patients are put on a strict gluten-free diet.听
Gluten
Wheat is not the only grain to have a protein toxic to Coeliac - rye, barley and some oats also have similar proteins. It is not easy to exclude these proteins from the diet because they are often in many processed foods.听
Osteoporosis Low bone density is found in up to one in three women and one in twelve men in the overall population.听 But one study has shown that up to half of people with coeliac disease have osteoporosis, even when following a gluten-free diet.听 It is therefore important make up any calcium shortfall by eating foods like tinned fish, dried fruit, spinach and tofu - or dairy products.听
