"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Heart Attacks
Every two minutes someone in the UK has a heart attack. Half the victims will die, most of them before they reach a hospital. Last year, heart attacks killed 120,000 people – twice as many as the three biggest cancer killers (lung, breast and bowel) put together.
UK high rates of heart disease
We are winning the battle – the number of men and women dying from heart attacks has halved in the last 20 years – but we still have one of the highest rates of heart disease in the world and we could be doing much better.
Over-emphasis on medication?
Dr Mark Porter investigates the latest thinking on preventing heart attacks and asks if we have become over-dependent on medication. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being made globally on the back of soaring sales of preventative medicines like cholesterol-lowering drugs, but what about simple lifestyle changes like diet and exercise? Is the role of drugs over-emphasised because of a combination of vested commercial interest and doctors’ and patients’ desire for a quick fix.
Steps to help someone suffering from a heart attack
And what can be done to help prevent someone from having a heart attack? Mark tests his resuscitation skills on the latest generation of computerised robots at one of the country’s leading training centres and finds out what members of the public can do for someone with a suspected heart attack.
Treatments on offer at best cardiac units
And, with the help of a consultant cardiologist, he follows the path of a heart attack victim from home to hospital and back again, in the quest to discover the sort of treatment on offer from the best cardiac units across the country.
