Sexual Problems

As part of Radio 4's Sex Lives of Us season, Dr Mark Porter presents a special edition of Case Notes on sexual problems.

He's joined in the studio by two experts: Dr John Dean, Sexual Physician and President Elect of the International Society for Sexual Medicine听and Susan Quilliam, a psychologist with a special interest in relationship and sexual problems.

Common issues

Mark and his guests discuss many of the physical听issues which affect people's sex lives, including premature ejaculation in men and difficulty achieving orgasm in women.听

He finds out about the different methods that can be adopted to help overcome these problems, from trying different techniques in bed to听counselling.

Erectile dysfunction

Nearly every man who suffers from erectile dysfunction, or impotence, can be helped to some degree by drugs such as Viagra and Cialis.

However, as NHS rules currently mean that most people have to pay for these drugs privately, many turn to the internet to get hold of the cheap pills - and risk being fleeced.

One听solution to this problem could be to allow high street pharmacies to distribute Viagra without prescription.听 Lesley Hilton finds out how one such trial is going in Manchester.

Low sex drive in women听

Although there are many factors that can influence a person's sex drive such as ill health or stress, hormones like testosterone can also play a part.

Both men and women produce testosterone, and if a woman's levels fall due to the menopause or surgical removal of the ovaries, her sex drive will fall dramatically.

Consultant gynaecologist Mr Nick Panay听tells Mark about Intrinsa, a new form of testosterone replacement designed to help boost sex drive in women who have lost their ovaries.听听
