Contraception

This week Case Notes听 will be examining new contraception on the market and where you can get it.听

Contraception
Britain has one of the leading contraception services in the world and yet we have one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates. How can this be? Mark Porter discusses the options available to us and how we can go about changing our record with our teenagers. Knowing whats available doesn't just mean reaching out to the youth of today, there seems to be a product on the market that is reducing the numbers of hysterectomies in older women. It's an Inter-Uterine System - IUS, different from the typical IUDs (devices) around like the coil. It is similar in shape but releases progesterone hormone which reduces periods.听 Yet if you take a quick look on the internet to research your contraception of choice before having this fitted you may be worried by what you read - stories of听prolonged bleeding and听 terrible period pains.Case Notes听 goes in search of the answers and sees if there really is an easy alternative to hysterectomy.听

Male contraception
Women have the Pill and countless other choices of contraception but what choices do men have? Condoms and surgery and not much else ... until now. Well, truth be told, we'll have to wait another 5 years or so, but the male "pill" is almost with us. Doctors around the world are studying various hormone options for men to use in order to share the burden of contraception with their partners. There might be a pill, an injection that could last 3 months at a time, or an implant that releases hormones slowly in order to stop the production of sperm. Concern is that if sperm production is stopped, will that affect performance and libido? We'll speak to volunteers in the studies going on the UK and find out where the rest of the world is in the race to a Male Pill.听

A quick and easy guide to access
We'll also be giving you the听guide to access contraception, what's free and what's not, and where anyone can go to get it.听
