"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Full programme transcript >>
Epilepsy
Around听450,000 people in the UK have epilepsy, and one in twenty people have an epileptic seizure at some point in their lives.听Case Notes听investigates the causes of the condition and what to do if you see someone having a seizure.
Dr Mark Porter's studio guest is Dr Henry Smithson, GP and Chair of the Epilepsies Guidelines Group. And Mark visits Great Ormond Street Hospital to find out how common epilepsy is in young children.
The programme will also address the issues听for women who have epilepsy and wish to have a family. Drug treatment is known to have risks for the developing child, but it is essential that the mother does not stop taking her medication and seeks medical advice. Mark talks to Sally Gomersall, who has faced this dilemma. He also speaks to Dr James Morrow, Consultant Neurologist at Belfast Royal Hospitals, who is the man behind the UK Epilepsy and Pregnancy Register.
And Trisha McNair reports from the National Society of Epilepsy headquarters where Dr John Duncan is doing research using new scanning techniques to help understand the causes of epilepsy.
This is the last episode of Case Notes听in the current series but we will be back early in May.
