"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Cosmetic Surgery
In this episode of Case Notes, Dr Mark Porter will be reporting on the commonest kinds of cosmetic surgery and how to get the best advice and treatment possible.听
Mark's guest in the studio is Mr Simon Withey, consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.
He warns about how low prices are tempting some cosmetic surgery patients overseas - even though they might not meet their surgeon before the operation. And if things go wrong the NHS can end up picking up the tab.听
Peeling the years away
One of the most significant recent developments in the field of cosmetic surgery has been the explosion in the availability of non-surgical cosmetic techniques like botox and chemical peels.
Botox works by paralysing the muscles of the face which are used in frowning and raising the eyebrows, so that fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed out.
The results are temporary and the procedure will need to be repeated every 3 to 9 months to maintain the new "look".
A facial peel is a treatment which involves taking away the top layers of skin.
This new layer of skin heals to form a top layer, which is smoother than the skin that's been removed.
Breast surgery
Mrs Jacqueline Lewis, oncoplastic breast surgeon at the Charing Cross Hospital , tells Mark about the different breast implants available.
She describes the best options available in terms of safety as well as cosmetic appearance.
She also offers advice on how to choose the right surgeon, and not necessarily opt for the free consultations offered.
The fairer sex?
The vast majority of cosmetic procedures may be performed on women, but a growing number of men are considering them too.
Claudia Hammond talks to Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Adrian Richards of the Shelburne Hospital in High Wycombe about why he's seeing more male patients.
He explains how men can听cover up their scars with a beard so they don't have to tell everyone about their surgery.
We hear from two men who have undergone cosmetic procedures - what made them decide to do it? And are they pleased with their new looks?听 |
