"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Vaccinations
Research People are wanted as volunteers to test out many vaccinations when research gets to testing on a human level. The HIV vaccine is no exception. In 1981 when the disease was named, it was expected that there would be a vaccine within the next few years 鈥 around 1984/85. There have been many projects on the go but none have proved successful yet. However, there is promising work happening in various hospitals around the country (and the world) and Mark Porter goes to meet the volunteers and the doctors to find out just how far away a vaccine is.
Allergies Looking to the future,听work is听in progress on vaccines for allergies. In August 2003 researchers in America announced they had managed to 鈥渢urn off鈥 peanut allergic reactions in mice. They are hoping that this particular vaccine could be used in humans (after clinical trials) to turn off reactions so they no longer see symptoms of the allergy. Case Notes looks at how far they have got, and the prospects for other allergy vaccinations.
Closer to home We鈥檒l also be taking a look at the latest thoughts on the safety of particular vaccines and what you should be considering for your travels abroad, safety at home and for your children.听
You can listen to Case Notes on听Tuesday 25th May 2004 at 9pm and Wednesday 26th May at 4.30pm.
