"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Depression
British GPs issued 30 million prescriptions for antidepressants last year - double the number issued in 1994 - but new research suggests that the drugs offer little benefit to most people with the more common milder forms of depression. Is the NHS wasting millions of pounds that could be better spent on offering support and psychotherapy?听
Children
Depression can be a very serious illness that warrants aggressive intervention but do 140,000 school children in the UK really need to be taking antidepressants? Do they help, are they safe and what effect do they have on a developing child? It's always been assumed that antidepressants have a similar effect in younger patients as they do in adults but that assumption has been proved wrong for two widely used drugs, Seroxat and Efexor, both of which are now banned in the under-18's. But are other antidepressants any better?听
Those in care and the homeless
Plus we'll be finding out what care is available for those at the edge of society. Many homeless people and those in care are sufferers of depression yet can quite easily be missed off the list for any counselling or medication to improve their conditions.听
Join Dr Mark Porter for Case Notes听 on Depression on Tuesday 31st August 2004.听
