"I spend half my week practising medicine and the other half writing and talking about it as a GP in Gloucestershire. Working on Case Notes has been a boon for both me and my patients. One of the principal aims of the programme is to keep our listeners up-to-date with the latest developments in healthcare, and to accomplish that I get to interview a wide range of specialists at the cutting edge of medicine. A rare privilege that ensures our listeners aren't the only ones to learn something new."

Caesarean Sections
Nearly a quarter of all births in the UK are delivered by Caesarean Section. Is it because women are too posh to push? Are Caesareans medically necessary?
Dr Mark Porter investigates the reasons for C-sections and the medical consequences for the mothers and babies.
His guest in the studio is Mr Patrick O鈥橞rien,听a consultant obstetrician at University College London Hospitals.
Mark visits St Mary鈥檚 Maternity Hospital in Portsmouth, where one in four pregnancies end in Caesarean section - the same as the national average, to find out what's behind the increase in C-sections.
He also travels to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shropshire where less that 12% of mothers gave birth via Caesarean section in 2006 to find out how the maternity unit there achieved such low figures.
Jane Jempson, Matron at St Mary鈥檚 Maternity Hospital, explains what happens after having a Caesarean, and we hear listeners' experiences of the procedure. |
