A telephone engineer with most remote job in BT is hanging up on a 40-year career after making his 70th visit to the Scottish islands of St Kilda.
John Macaulay's job is to maintain the telephone exchange at the islands' Ministry of Defence missile tracking station and cover the Western Isles.

Broadband television for islands

Broadband technology is to be used to give islanders access to locally produced television programmes through their PCs.
Western Isles Council, Western Isles Enterprise and other project partners, have received funding from Europe's LEADER+ initiative.

Deport man bailed ahead of appeal

A young Thai man facing deportation from Shetland has been released on bail pending his appeal.
Sakchai Makao, 23, who has lived on the islands since he was 10, was taken from his home in Lerwick two weeks ago.
He was being held in Durham Jail while awaiting deportation as a foreign national with a criminal record. He was convicted of fireraising in 2004.

Reptiles perish in island blaze

The owners of an island reptile centre have told how they tried to save nearly 200 snakes and lizards from a burning breeding unit.
Catherine and Alex Shearer were beaten back by black clouds of toxic fumes as the blaze consumed the building at Skye Serpentarium on Monday night.

Contract awarded for 拢50m scheme

A consortium led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has won a contract to administer a 拢50m scheme to help Scottish communities buy land.
Big Lottery Fund in Scotland awarded the three-year contract, worth 拢3.9m to HIE, on Thursday.
