Breakwater Bid

Hi Folks - sorry about the delay in moderating at the end of last week, this was due to illness (me). Much better thanks.

Good news for Mull & Iona Fishermen (and other boat users) as reported in the Islands Network Newsletter: "Mull & Iona Fishermen from Iona and the neighbouring port of Fionnphort on Mull are hoping to increase their safety at work with a bid to see harbour breakwaters introduced. New breakwaters would enable islanders to berth their vessels at the harbours at Fionnphort and Iona overnight.

Fishing boats and the Iona ferry currently berth overnight in a natural offshore shelter and to reach their vessels fishermen and ferry crews have to make a one-mile journey by rowing boat or dinghy in the open sea – often in darkness.

The Sound of Iona Harbours Committee has been established to pursue the development and funding is now being sought for a feasibility study on the proposals (email soundofiona@freeuk.com for more info.).

A similar project has been undertaken by The Eilean Easdale Trust on the island of Easdale – where it is hoped that a £61,600 harbour improvement scheme will encourage tourism (see www.easdale.org to find out more)."

Alternatives to the ferry

Can't wait two days for the next ferry? Well, now you don't have to. Simply cash in your life savings and . A snip at £150k.

If you require a bit more space, for tennis courts perhaps, why not try ?

Can you name this boat?

Here are two boats side by side at Iona jetty in the early 70s or late 60s. One of them is the June Gibson (outside). Can anyone name the other?

who are bloggers?

From todays Herald: "They're also, often by their own admission, exceptional ranters, grammar-shy backstabbers, self-aggrandising name-droppers, gossips, shameless narcissists or perpetrators of self-indulgent, impenetrable purple prose. All too infrequently, they're brilliant writers, brainstormers, mindbenders, sharp observers of human behaviour and essential information distributors.

They update their blogs weekly, daily, even hourly, and they do it because, well . . . why do they do it? Because diaries and biros don't have a cut-and-paste facility? Because they can't share their innermost ramblings with friends? Because they genuinely know something nobody else does and need to share it with the entire interweb populace? Unadulterated catharsis? Frustrated poets, essayists and novelists?

Yes to all…"
