In Season 1 Matt is a Los Angeles police officer with the ability to hear other people's thoughts. He discovers his ability when he over hears the thoughts of Molly Walker, a young girl hiding from the man who killed her parents. Matt ends up working with the FBI to try and find this man, a dangerous serial killer named Sylar.
Meanwhile, The Company are still abducting people with abilities. Matt, Ted and Mr Bennet end up uniting to try and destroy The Company's tracking system. Mr Bennet knows Claire won't be safe until the system is destroyed. Their quest leads them to The Kirby Plaza where the Season 1 finale takes place. The tracking system turns out to be Molly Walker. She tries to locate Sylar for them, but he's already heading there. Matt tries to shoot him but Sylar flings the bullets back at him and Matt is shot several times.
Matt survived the bullets and starts Season 2 as a Detective. His first assignment is to investigate the mysterious death of Kaito Nakamura. Teaming up with Nathan they discover a photo that holds vital clues to the killer. That killer is believed to be Maury Parkman, Matt's dad. They meet in his dad's flat and that's when the weirdness begins. Matt learns that he has far more power than he can possibly imagine.
