Season 1

Matt was a Los Angeles police officer and discovered his ability when he overheard the thoughts of Molly Walker. Her parents had been killed by Sylar and she was now an orphan. With The Company continuing to abduct people with abilities, Matt, Ted and Mr Bennet united to destroy The Company's tracking system, which turned out to be Molly. Their quest led them to Kirby Plaza. Molly tried to locate Sylar for them, but he was already heading there. Matt tried to shoot Sylar, but he flung the bullets back at him and shot Matt several times.

Season 2

Matt survived the bullets and got a promotion as a detective. His first assignment was to investigate the mysterious death of Kaito Nakamura. Teaming up with Nathan, they discovered a photo that held vital clues to the killer. That killer was believed to be Maury Parkman, Matt's dad. They all met up in Maury's flat and this was where Matt learned he had far more power than he had ever imagined.

Season 3

During a trance, Matt discovered that in the future he'd married a girl called Daphne, had a baby girl and adopted Molly. He helped Daphne escape Pinehearst and forgave her villainy, as he knew she had a heart of gold. In Volume 4, to Matt's surprise, he had gained the ability to paint the future. With this new talent Matt drew Daphne being shot, which of course came true. He escaped from Building 26 and took Daphne to a hospital, but she died of an infection. Blinded by grief, Matt wanted revenge and went after The Hunter and his secret love, Alena. As Danko fired the bullet that would kill him, Matt was rescued at the last moment by Hiro and discovered that he did have something to live for, his baby son. He joined the Petrellis in the fight for freedom, but was too late. Finding Nathan dead and Sylar defeated by Peter, he reluctantly used his ability to wipe Sylar's mind and make Sylar believe he was Nathan.

Season 4

Matt returned to his wife and son, trying to stop using his abilities and refusing to help Angela. However, Sylar's consciousness proved too strong and took up residence inside Matt's head. He taunted Matt, manipulating his mind and making him see things. Matt snapped while at work, shouting at a Sylar nobody else could see. He managed to play this down, but soon Sylar started to gain more control, briefly taking over Matt's mind when a drugs bust went wrong. Realising that Sylar's powers over him were intensifying, Matt attempted to exorcise Sylar with alcohol. But when he passed out Sylar slipped into his body and took over. After Matt's mind and Matt's body (controlled by Sylar) had fought a deadly battle, Matt's mind made the ultimate sacrifice and arranged to kill his own body. He survived (healed by Peter), and after regaining consciousness he desperately tried to stop Nathan, and Sylar's consciousness, becoming one again. He failed. But a changed Sylar had returned and this time he asked Matt to rid him of his powers, so Matt obliged. Making sure that Sylar could never threaten his family again, he began to bury Sylar alive in the walls of his basement, stopped just in time by Peter. Having let Sylar and Peter leave to fulfil the prophecy, Matt dealt with Eli. Pushing a thought into Eli's mind, Matt convinced him to return to the Carnival and admit that he had opened fire on the Family, not H.R.G.
