Surfergirl
Name: Kat Dawes
Age: 28
Job: Carve magazine
Years Surfing: 12, not that you'd know it!
Habitat: Cornwall, formerly West Wales
Boards: 3
Quiver: 6'3" x 18 1/4 x 2 1/8 T&C from Torquay, Vic, 6'5" x 19 x dunno T&C from Feurte, bargain Neil Perrow from Sydney with 'team glass' i.e. dented deck.
Local Break: Deepest West Wales!
Places Surfed: East coast Oz, Canaries, Florida, Portugal and Spain next week!
Favourite Surf Films: 'Doped Youth', 'Tracks Vol 3' - anything free off the front of a mag. Also 'Poetic Silence' and 'Billabong Odyssey'.
Fave surfers: Neridah Falconer, Megan Abubo, Lisa and Layne. Occy, Luke Stedman (so cute), Slater, Michael Peterson (after reading the book!)
Worst Wipeout: Hanging on for dear life as a big set came through at Woolamai while Lisa Anderson and co. were in the water with me, the day before the 4* Roxy Pro.
I was trying not to look a) scared and b) crap and managed neither! I didn't want to bail so hung on like mad, came up with rail-saver sized gouges in my hand and a board with a busted tail. I then got out as it's a shark mecca down there!
Favourite Manoeuvre: Nice fast bottom turns, with all the anticipation of the next section.
Worst Surfing Habit: Someone once said to me, unless you are in a comp, its quantity not quality of waves. I just don't catch enough. Lack of confidence and focus I guess.
Best Surfing Experience: Broken Head near Byron Bay - crystal clear barrels, (not with me in them though), long rides and friends from all over the world. Returning home and falling in love with Wales all over again.
Weirdest Surfing Experience: Probably the seal that came up so close to my brother he thought he might pat it on the head, until I told him it might not be the best plan.
Other Interests: Writing, web design (amateur!), my iPod and Mac, learning Welsh, trying to avoid a 9-5.
