4 singers-turned-actors who bagged (or nearly bagged) an Oscar

If you haven't yet heard about Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (A.K.A. the much more succinct 'Valerian'), where have you been?! No, really. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?!

Starring Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan, the much-anticipated film has been lauded a sci-fi adventure and even features a cameo by Rihanna, playing a shape-shifting alien called Bubbles. Standard.

Is an Oscar in Cara Delevingne's future?

Luc Besson, director of Valerian, certainly seems to think so.

And while this might only be Cara's sixth acting credit (she formerly starred in Suicide Squad, Paper Towns and Kids In Love, to name a few), Valerian director Luc Besson has already pegged the model as a future Oscar winner. High praise indeed, right?

But Cara won't be the first - and definitely not the last - to make a career change that ended in Oscar talk. From Jared Leto's scene-stealing performance that bagged him a gold gong to Queen Bey's buzz, here's the stars who have been there and done it...

Harry Styles

Is there anything that Harry Styles can't do?! (Rhetorical question, because the answer is quite obviously 'no'.)

Two years after heading off in a different direction, the floppy-haired former 1D star has bagged himself a No.1 album, announced a solo world tour and even earned himself some Oscar buzz for his role in Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk'.

From Entertainment Weekly ("For the One Direction fans wondering, Harry Styles is also solid, seamlessly blending into the ensemble.") to The Telegraph ("...Although there is a bright, convicted, and unexpectedly not-at-all-jarring performance from Harry Styles, formerly of the boy band One Direction, as one of the young soldiers on the beach."), the Sign Of The Times crooner has racked up his fair share of shining reviews, with movie fans calling for an Oscar nom.

Speaking about the thorough audition process, Nolan told the Guardian that Harry pretty much had the, ahem, x factor:

"It’s my job to see potential in people. And every role that I cast... you’re trying to see what a person can do that they haven’t done before. You don’t want them repeating themselves. So my job in the case of Harry Styles is to look at his audition (and he did a very extensive audition process with us) and see the potential of, ‘O.K., what’s he going to bring to this character that I couldn’t have anticipated?’

So he auditioned. I auditioned literally thousands of young men with different combinations of young men. And he had it."

We never doubted you for a second, Hazza.

It's official: Beyoncé transcends logic. No one can possibly excel at everything, right?! WRONG. Oh so wrong. The Queen has earned her crown in every medium - from singing to dancing, record-breaking to baby-naming - including the acting world.

The buzz for Bey started back in 2006 with Dreamgirls. Playing Deena Jones, Bey took centre-stage alongside Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. Not a shabby cast, eh?

Beyoncé was tipped for a Best Actress nomination but it was her co-star Jennifer Hudson who walked away with a glistening statuette...

Jennifer Hudson

Beyoncé might not have scooped a nomination for Dreamgirls but Jennifer Hudson most certainly did.

Playing Effie White in the film adaptation of the stage musical, Jennifer not only scored a nomination, she also won the award. Up against the likes of Cate Blanchett and Abigal Breslin for Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer walked away an Academy Award winner in 2007 and gave one hell of an acceptance speech.

"I have to just take this moment in," the star said. "I cannot believe this. I didn't think I was going to win. Wow. If my grandmother was here to see me now - she was my biggest inspiration, because she was a singer and she had the passion for it but she never had the chance, and that was the thing that pushed me forward to continue."

Jared Leto

One of the biggest singer-turned-actor success stories is undoubtedly Jared Leto.

We're guessing the Thirty Seconds To Mars frontman has a more-than decorated trophy case at home - he has, after all, won 87 awards as part of the band, racking up a whopping 171 nominations in the process - and that cabinet became a bit more jam-packed when the singer turned his hand to acting.

From American Psycho to Suicide Squad, Jared has garnered critical acclaim for his acting abilities and won himself an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, while Matthew McConaughey bagged the Best Actor gong for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof in the same film.
