6 stars who have struggled with body image issues

As part of , Radio 1 are looking at all things to do with body image, starting with on 19th July. Dr Radha will be joined by Grace Victory to discuss body hang ups and how to get over them, as well as celebrating the best things about our bodies. The show will be followed by an episode focusing on male body image, which can be even harder to talk about, the following week.

Your body image is the way you see yourself and your body. Most of us care about how we look, which is totally normal, but some of us develop a very negative self image for various reasons - which can be damaging.

Celebrities are as vulnerable as anyone to negative body confidence. We round up some inspirational and relatable advice from stars who have been through struggles with their body image and come out positive on the other side.

1. Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez had a mature response to online critics who felt the need to comment on her weight. She's also very open about how hurtful she found it - especially while has been struggling with the difficult effects of the autoimmune disease Lupus on her physical and mental health.

“It hurt my feelings because I never experienced that before," she told Instyle UK 2015, after jibes were posted about a picture of her in a bikini. "But I didn’t want that to be my story, so I said, ‘I don’t care what you think.' I’m learning that you can be comfortable and still look beautiful.”

The gorgeous star is also realistic about the fact that body confidence doesn't happen overnight, and isn't always easy to maintain every single day. “Some days, I like what I see," she said. "Other days, I’m like, ‘I’m not even going to bother.’”

2. Kesha

鈥淭his song is dedicated to my fans鈥 鈥 Kesha and the inspiration behind her new single

Kesha talks about the support she has had from her fans and how this song is for them.

Kesha is back with her first new music in four years, and we are loving her bold and authentic new direction. The star has made claims of body shaming and bullying against her former producer, and has struggled with an eating disorder.

After seeking professional help, the pop star now has a much healthier body image. "Every day I have to look in the mirror and make the choice to be kind to myself," she told Vogue in 2015. "This is who I am—I have to love that."

3. Demi Lovato

The Confident singer Demi Lovato is well, just that, but it's taken her a long time to get to this place. Demi was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011, but also struggled with bulimia for many years.

The star tries to use her personal journey towards health and a body positive self image to inspire her fans to feel good about themselves, too.

"Feeling better than I've ever felt," she posted in this year. "It's all about self love. Tell yourself you're beautiful daily. Be gentle with yourself. Eat carbs without guilt and remember that life is too short to worry about what others think!"

4. Sam Smith

Sam Smith famously lost a lot of weight, but he has been refreshingly honest about the effect of the media and working in the music industry on his body image.

"I still feel pressured to look a certain way,” he told the NME in 2015. “For women, the pressure in this industry is horrendous and it’s got to stop. But it’s the same for guys, even though they won’t speak about it."

Above all, Sam recognises that learning to feel good about yourself is an ongoing dialogue. "Just because I’ve lost weight doesn’t mean that I’m happy and content with my body. Because of the media, and because of what I feel I should look like, it’s always going to be a battle in my head.”

5. Lorde

Lorde always seems super confident, but her positive body image has developed after going through difficulties with online trolls.

"I remember being made aware of my looks and my body in a way that I had never been," she recently told the NME, recalling the early days of her career. "I remember all these kids online were like, 'F*ck her, she's got really far-apart eyes,'" she said. "Just weird sh*t like that...It rocked my foundations and could have f*cked me, you know?"

Luckily, Lorde has able to find safe spaces to develop her peace of mind. "I was able to return to my family and shelter against that and get to where I am now," she said. "I feel so comfortable in myself."

6. Little Mix

Little Mix are powerful, confident and talented women. But like anyone else they've faced their share of body insecurity, made worse by public scrutiny of their figures. The girls credit growing older with helping them learn to not give a stuff about what anyone else thinks.

"As we’ve got older, we genuinely don’t give a s**t any more," Jesy told The Sun last year. "It's hard to take when you’re young, but now we’re more confident. We’re happy to be how we are, and don’t care if we put on a couple of pounds."

While it's not always easy, the key is to start appreciating the skin you're in. "You should celebrate any size," said Jesy. "If you can rock your body with confidence, and you’re happy in your own skin, there’s nothing sexier. I feel like we’re all in a really good place with how we feel about ourselves."
