5 amazing moments with Tom Holland and Zendaya
We couldn't be more gassed about the new movie, meaning we nearly hyperventilated when the film's stars Zendaya and Tom Holland came into Greg James' studio. (Don't worry, we've calmed down now, promise.)
Making their Radio 1 debuts, the two stars gave us the full lowdown on the return of our favourite superhero. What's more, they were totally lovely and a whole lot of fun. So sit back and enjoy their best bits, below...
1. When Tom revealed the extent of his Spidey fandom.
He's played Billy Elliot on the stage, but it turns out that Tom really, really always wanted to play Spider-Man.
"It blows my mind every day," he told Greg. "It’s definitely beat me up a little bit, like, I’m super tired and could do with like a 20 day nap but I’ve had the time of my life so far. I always wanted to be in a Marvel movie and I always wanted to play a super hero, but I never imagined that I would be playing Spider-Man in a Marvel movie. So the fact that that has come true is crazy to me, I genuinely can’t believe it. And I think if I’d never got the part of Spider-Man I probably would have made my own one!"
2. When Zendaya revealed she related to her character Michelle.
Zendaya's dry, sassy but ever so slightly awkward character Michelle sounds like a really great character to play. "She's so smart and she's so in her own world sometimes," says Zendaya, "and genuinely thinking 3000 steps ahead of everybody that it makes her come off strange, Like, she doesn't know how to have normal social interactions with people her own age."
Turns out the former Disney star has more in common with Michelle than you might think. "I feel like I have that sometimes," says Zendaya. "I feel like it’s very hard for me to make friends my own age because I’m just an old lady." The coolest old lady we ever saw.
3. When they reacted to meeting their heroes in exactly the right way.
Tom Holland and Zendaya talk about being star struck and bad accents with Greg James
Being nervous around Iron Man and not being able to say Spider-Man!
They say don't meet your heroes, but when Tom first met his idol Robert Downey Jr. on the Spider-Man set he managed to handle it (accidentally) in the best possible way.
"I met him and completely fanboyed right," said Tom, "And then he actually walked in the room, and I realised I’d been talking to his stunt double! So I’d got the sort of awkward fanboy stage out the way before I actually met him."
Turns out Zendaya was about as cool about meeting Beyonce.
"I acted like an idiot when I met her, I just couldn’t look her in the eye." she said. "She was talking to me and I’d just look away, then as she looked away I’d look at her. My dad was like, what, you screwed that up!"
And that's why we love the pair of them.
4. When Tom revealed exactly when his accent slips.
While British star Tom can do a pretty flawless American accent, turns out there was one word which always got him. And it was, well, quite an important one.
"The one word I couldn’t say, ever, was Spider-Man," admitted Tom. Peter Parker is supposed to come from Queens in New York, but everytime Tom said Spider-Man he found himself slipping into a Deep South accent. So, every time you hear the word in the film, it's actually been overdubbed.
5. When they couldn't agree on correct plane footwear.
The duo took part in a special round of Rage Against the Answer Machine. When Zendaya revealed she likes teaming slide on shoes with her comfy tracksuit at the airport, Tom was incensed.
"You’re supposed to wear boots," he raged, "What if you crash on a desert island, you don’t wanna have slides on!" We have literally never heard this before, but, we suppose it's logical...
"We clearly don’t agree on anything," sighed Zendaya eventually - but we know she doesn't really mean it.
