6 celebrity wedding crashers: from Ed Sheeran to Tom Hanks

Ever crashed a wedding? Nope? Us either. Ever wanted to? Yup? Same.

While hitting up a stranger's nuptials and dancing the night away with newfound pals sounds like one hell of a night, the probability that it will happen is massively unlikely... unless you're a celebrity, of course.

Cue Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell, gatecrashing a ceremony in Winnipeg, Canada last weekend.

Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell are officially wedding crashers!

The duo crashed a stranger's wedding and even requested a song.

Kayleigh and Kirsten Jennings (A.K.A. the newlyweds) were shimmying the night away, revelling in their holy matrimony, when they received a message from the owner of the building. Chatting to CBC News, Kirsten recalled how their surprise arrival went down:

"[he said] 'Hey, is it OK if Kristen Stewart and her girlfriend, Stella, come and have a few drinks with you guys?' And I was like, 'Yeah, totally! Yeah, no problem.'"

But if you thought it was out of the ordinary for celebs to pull off such stunts, you'd be wrong. From Tom Hanks to Ed Sheeran, here's which of your favourite stars have more than successfully wedding crashed (and they've got photos to prove it)...

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's surprise appearance at the wedding of Max Singer and Kenya Smith, back in 2016, was orchestrated by the groom's sister. After months of planning and messages, Swifty turned up in all her platinum blonde glory and quickly became the talk of the wedding. (So if we're going to get technical about it, we guess Taylor didn't actually crash, but the loved-up couple were totally in the dark so same difference, right?)

As well as posing for some absolutely stellar wedding photos, Tay performed a stripped-down rendition of Blank Space and even gave the couple a homemade present. Did someone say 'wedding guest goals'?

Tom Hanks

This may very well be the photobomb of the century and we're not jealous one bit. Nah-uh, not jealous at aaaaaallllll. (Fine, maybe a little.)

Meg Miller, a New York City photographer, was capturing newlyweds Elisabeth and Ryan in Central Park when a familiar face jogged by: Tom Hanks. Clad in a tracksuit, Tom stopped to congratulate the couple and merrily posed for professional photos before whipping out his phone and snapping one for himself (he posted the selfie to Instagram, captioning it: 'Elisabeth and Ryan! Congrats and blessings! Hanx').

But while Tom's unexpected appearance might've floored the happy couple, it wasn't the first time he's found himself in the middle of someone's big day. A similar thing happened while he was filming Forrest Gump back in 1993, according to then-bride Mary Chapman:

"I saw this light blue Lincoln at the stop light just down from the church, and there was a guy hanging out waving and honking the horn. I didn’t think anything of it," she told Beaufort Online. "By the time we got to the front of the church, the car pulled up, and this guy hops out and runs up to me! He says, 'Hey, I’m Tom Hanks, and I just wanted to say good luck!'"

Serena Williams

When getting wed in Miami Beach, you've got to expect a few celebrity sightings. But what you might not expect is holding your nuptials a stones throw away from a sunbathing Serena Williams.

Rewind to 2014 and the big day of Ruth and Sam Kormoi. As rumours started circulating among guests that one of the world's greatest athletes was chilling further down the beach, Sam stayed focused on the job at hand: "I wasn’t surprised, being that they’re celebrities, that she was staying in South Beach Miami anyway," he told People. "I didn’t think anything about taking a picture; I was more focused on, you know, our wedding and vows."

But it turns out that they got some photos and then some, as friends called Serena over and she quickly obliged:

"She said congratulations, and she gave me a hug – that was the first thing she did," said Ruth. "That was when she was like, ‘Let’s take pictures!’ Everyone was so ecstatic, they kept running up. But we were able to get pictures, which was a great thing."

Ed Sheeran

We don't have the official stats but we'd hazard a guess that Ed Sheeran's music has accompanied at least 78.4% of first dances since he burst on the scene. (Total guess; don't hold us to that.) This is the same man responsible for inspiring not one, not two, but FIVE proposals at a London concert back in 2015, after all.

From Photograph to Kiss Me, Ed is a romantic music making machine and top of our list for a wedding cameo. One lucky couple to receive such a cameo was Kya and Matt Debono, back in March 2015. After falling on hard times, an Aussie radio station hooked the duo up with a mega wedding complete with surprise mega wedding guest: Ed Sheeran.

Who wouldn't want Sheeran personally serenading them? After singing Thinking Out Loud, Ed's parting words to the newlyweds were slightly cheekier than the mushy love song: "Make lots of babies tonight." Classic Ed.

Maroon 5

This video contains some strong language and third party videos may contain adverts.

Watching Maroon 5's video for Sugar gives us all the warm feels. Truly. But what makes us even warmer is knowing that a few of the featured weddings were totally legit and those reactions? Totally legit, too.

"Only the grooms knew in each case," a Maroon 5 rep told ET. "However they disclosed it to their bride and the wedding party, we're not sure, but they all wanted it to be as equally a surprise as we did. They had stages set up for their actual wedding band already. All we did was some simple continuity changes to match each one as best we could."

Chatting about the experience on the Golden Globes red carpet, Adam Levine spilled all about making the video happen: "It was really stressful to arrange all of it, but it was super fun. It felt good to kind of, you know, surprise these people and make them happy.

A logistical nightmare? Sure. A dreamy outcome? Totally.
